Padang and Bukit Tinggi are two favourite destinations for Malaysians. It is made popular because of the close relationship between Malaysia and its neighbouring Sumatera, Indonesia. Some of friends still have relatives in Sumatera. Although my maternal grandparents were from Negeri Sembilan which practices Adat Perpatih, I had no idea of our family ties in Sumatera.
Historically, in the 14th century, the Minangkabau people started migrating to Negeri Sembilan, in the Malay Peninsula and settled in Rembau. The Minangkabau people successfully lived in peace with the existing aborigines. As a result of the migration, there was mixed marriages from both sides and these people are known as “Suku Biduanda”. Suku Biduanda is the ultimate heir of Negeri Sembilan.
Bukittinggi and Padang were easy choices for many Malaysians because it is heaven for clothes shopping, the food is amazing and the scenic Bukittinggi is located on highland, thus the cold temperature.
Recently, I have been to Bukittinggi and Padang with my friends and discovered there are more to Bukittinggi and Padang than just shopping. The scenic kelok 44 to the magnificent mirror lake view of Lake Maninjau and the Twin Lake to Tree Root Bridge in Painan and to the amazing Nagari Saribu Rumah Gadang, I doubt I will be able to do justice by describing the beauty of those places.
