As a kid, I remembered Ipoh as a dead town by night. But my recent stay at Kinta Riverfront Hotel surprised me on how happening Ipoh could be on a Saturday night. Arriving at Kinta Riverfront Hotel late in the afternoon, I did not even notice the Kinta River in front of the hotel. After dinner, I took a peep out of the window and I saw a celebration of lights, Ipoh I-city.
Then it occured to me, Ipoh has its own I-city, the Ipoh I-city. Although, it is on a different scale if compared to that of Shah Alam and Terengganu, it is enough for a weekend night out for Ipoh locals and visiting tourists. A stroll down the Kinta river enjoying the evening breeze with family members and friends are indeed a quality time well spent.
As Lily and I crossed the road to walk along the walking platform by the Kinta River, Lily reminisced her years living in Ipoh and how Ipoh had changed since then. My golden memories of Ipoh is the moment when my dearest father brought my siblings and I to play at Taman DR as we aptly called whenever we visited our maternal grandmother in Manjoi, Ipoh.
It was drizzling, but we were very excited on the colourful neon trees that we decided to continue exploring this side of Ipoh. We reached the first bridge that connects the hotel side and the museum side. Little did I know, there is Tin Mining Museum in Ipoh. Restaurants and bars are scattered along the Kinta River with patrons enjoying the view of Kinta River and its cool breeze. Musics are played out loud, laughters and buzzing chats filled in the night. One the restaurants has old-school swings as eating place. Coolness. It’s really unique.
If you would like to take a good picture of the Ipoh I-city, place your tripod on the bridge and shoot away. Nevertheless, please be reminded on a Saturday night, there are huge turnouts at Ipoh I-city. Expect a bit of a traffic and limited parking space.
We quickened our pace for the weather seemed to water the earth real heavy that night. I lost count on how many times Lily told me, as though she was chanting it in her heart, that she needs to visit Perak again very soon. Although I did not say it as much as her, one thing I know for sure I’m coming back to Perak again, no doubt.
It does not take a booming or touristy place to capture my heart. The smallest thing or tiny bit of the old city together with the friendliness of the Ipoh locals captured my heart most. If you are ain’t sensitive like yours truly, visiting Ipoh I-city is recommended if you are in Ipoh at night. Atleast, it is a fun and enjoyable night stroll.
