After we had fun-filled outing to Santuari Kelah Sungai Petang, Kenyir, we were brought to Kenyir Elephant Camp located at Telemong River where we would be having a chance to observe the largest and most magnificent mammals ie. elephants at the Kenyir Elephant Camp. It is home to nine Malaysian-born elephants roaming free in an area set up in tropical forest environment with flowing streams and valleys.
To reach the sanctuary, we walked on the hanging bridge over the clean and pristine river. Beautiful sceneries were aplenty.
As we arrived later than expected, we did not see much of a trunk. We walked on the several canopy walkways from where one could see the elephants digging, bathing and exploring. In fact, there was a platform where one could see the elephants performing a handful of tricks, like playing the harmonica. After having a tour at the Kenyir Elephant Camp, we were told to rush to the Telemong River where the elephants were taken for baths.
When we arrived at the stream, there was already a huge crowd gathering at the mouth of the stream. Each elephant was accompanied by their mahouts which were imported from Thailand. One baby elephant was creating a scene as he playful ran aimlessly towards the crowd. The mahout tried to call the baby elephant so as to calm him down.
The Kenyir Elephant Camp is set up by the Elephant Management Unit under the authority of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, the Central Terengganu Development Authority (KETENGAH) and the Terengganu State Government. The elephant camp is the foremost authority on elephant translocation to ensure a healthy elephant population and reduce human-elephant conflict.
