On Saturday morning, it takes awhile to wait for a table to be seated. It takes more time for order to be taken and to arrive. Despite all that, Roti Canai Kayu Arang keeps on swarming with crowd like a buzzing beehive. Famous for its local breakfast, you can order their house special ie. roti canai, a type of flat bread originated from South Indian eaten with dhal or modernized roti nanchos and roti tampal dangdut at Roti Canai Kayu Arang, Melaka.
When I was there the first time, I only ordered the roti canai and a plate of mouthwatering satay. I did not know that Roti Canai Kayu Arang is also famous for other local food such as nasi lemak, bihun kari, mee kari and soto.
You’ve got to try the nasi lemak with sotong goreng giant.
I had roti nanchos, a thick bread spread with chicken, cheeze, purple cabbage and other vegetable on my second trip.
The Secret Recipe of Roti Canai Kayu Arang
The secret lies in the way in which the roti is cooked ie using the firewood. No oil is used for cooking. The roti smells tasty and the firewood adds up to the taste.
No wonder the customers of Roti Canai Kayu Arang come from all over. It is not uncommon to hear different dialects spoken as you dip a chunk of roti canai into the dhal.
Since Roti Canai Kayu Arang is quite far from Melaka city centre, you need a car to get here. The restaurant is so famous you can easily find the route on Google Maps and Waze. Don’t panic if Google Map directs you to drive through a local village as you will find the restaurant at the end of the small path, next to a busy main road. I remember entering through a huge entrance of Kampung Bakar Batu.
Parking is available on site. Parking on weekend might not be that easy though.
