Kuching Wetland National Park is one of the many attractions one may visit in Kuching. It is located 15km from Kuching and approximately 5km from Damai Beach.
We departed from Telaga Air jetty to Satang Besar Island, from where we continued on to Kuching Wetland National Park which covers an area of 6610 hectares.
After a short break at Salak Fishing Village to grasp the daily lives of the local fishing village, we entered the smaller rivers and creeks in search of wildlife, such as proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaque monkeys, silver-leaf monkeys, monitor lizards and estuarine crocodiles and a range of bird including kingfishers and white-bellied eagles.

Although the park is relatively new, it is gaining popularity due to excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. A cruise down the river, we caught eyes on the proboscis monkeys, the crooked nose monkeys. Some were carrying baby proboscis monkeys. They were all adorable. I had been to many parts of Borneo, I had never encountered a large number of proboscis monkeys as in Kuching Wetland National Park. It is a sure sighting for proboscis monkeys.
As our boatman turned off the engine to enable us to enjoy the proboscis monkeys watching, the mud skippers were skipping on the surface of the water.
The hunt for the crocodiles was challenging as rapid movement from the boat would send the crocodiles away. Good eye sight is definitely a bonus. I had to try harder than the rest to spot the crocodiles. We spotted quite a few crocodiles in the water as well as baby crocodiles on the land.
Apart from the proboscis monkeys and crocodiles, we also had the chance to see the fireflies. Since the sun had yet to set down, we saw at least two trees of fireflies. One can’t stop to wonder the uniqueness of fireflies as they emit lights.
Next, we went to visit Salak Charcoal Factory which was quite similar to Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory. The logs were brought in using boat during high tides. The woods would be placed in the kiln. The kiln would be cemented leaving only few holes as entry point for oxygen.

Our tour for the day ended with beautiful and dramatic sunset.
