Once we hopped off the boat, we walked on the boardwalk to our respective huts. At Uncle Tan’s Wildlife Adventures, only our foot steps could be heard apart from the normal jungle noise. We were indeed very “excited” to begin our spartan life. You know, being the jane of the jungle. Orang utan lived within close proximity. God knows what were in store for us.
The walk from the main dining area to our room took 5-7 minutes. Basically, the huts are connected to the boardwalk elevated from the surrounded mangrove swamps. Boy, there is no connected toilet and the toilet is within 5 minutes walking distance from our small huts. Coward like me suffered the night holding the pee.
There, on the thin mattress covered with mosquito net was where I spent two nights of my whole life. As it provided the most air circulation (no-door-hut), I believed I was the first subject for animals & insects to attack. I suspected the huge raccoon looked alike animal shrieked next to my ear that night. I was having trouble sleeping, obviously. I was scared to death, really. But it was an experience like no other. If I were to talk about this experience of mine with others, I’d probably do so while patting my own shoulders.
This experience came close to my night stay at Lovina, Bali. I pre-booked a guesthouse which was relatively cheap, MYR18 per night for a room with Balinese garden shower. All went well until I switched off the light and succumbed to sound sleep after whole day affair of travelling from Kawah Ijen to Banyu Wangi to ferry-ing across to Gilimanuk, Bali to hopping on public bus full of roosters to finally arriving to the guesthouse at Lovina. A huge tikus literally fell next to where I was sleeping. I was afraid but I was too tired to bother myself to go to the receptionist to make my complaints. I woke up finding my bag and tooth brush and facial wash bitten by the mouse.
Ah, coming back to Uncle Tan’s Wildlife Adventures, there was also a field with a goal post; an area where guests would play sports like football or badminton.
