On 04.01.2014, I went for a white water rafting expedition in Gopeng. It marked my first trip of 2014. It was an outing with my hiking friends. By now, you should have known that white water rafting is not a new activity for me as I have done White Water Rafting Ulu Slim and White Water Rafting Sungkai. When I told my colleagues about WWR, I get the response of “I can’t do white water rafting because I don’t know how to swim”. Let me confess, though I have a diving licence and do water activities, I don’t know how to swim. I repeat, I don’t know how to swim. It is generally safe because each boat will be guided by marshal who would manouvre the boat and ensure the safety of the boat members.
Weather was good. We drove down to Gopeng at 8a.m. and reached approximately at 10.30a.m. After Gopeng exit, we were received by Radak Adventures whose services were used for white water rafting in Gopeng.
Once we reached the steel bridge, we parked our car by the river. After gearing up ourselves for the adventure with proper attire and waterproof bags, we were transferred by a lorry to the starting point which was 45 minutes away.
Standard safety briefing took place. We were then given a paddle, helmet and life jacket. I had difficulty with my helmet because I had to tie my GoPro manually. One of the thrills for this trip was that I was placed inside a boat with people whom I didn’t know. They did not know how to operate my GoPro too.
For good 1 and 1/2 hours, we did water confidence where everyone would flow with the currents. Sweat not, this is to avoid you getting panic if you drift far from your boat.
There are about 10 rapids in Sungai Kampar, Gopeng. The first three were the hardest ones. Some boats get capsized. Our boat performed outstandingly. However, had it not been the on time capture by the marshal, I would have been thrown against the rock. I was seated at the back of the boat next to the marshal, seemingly the most dangerous place. I was seated there because it was said to have the best view if I were to capture GoPro video. I remembered flying half way and pulled back into boat.

The costs for white water rafting is only RM150 inclusive of equipment, guides and lunch. We car pooled from KL and shared the costs. If you wish to stay overnight, there’s dorm available for as low as RM30 per night.
