Melaka is famous for its traditional mosques including Masjid Tengkera, Masjid Kampung Kling, Masjid Kampung Hulu, Masjid Peringgit and many others. Another addition is Masjid Selat.
Masjid Selat or Malacca Straits Mosque is a modern mosque located on the man-made Malacca Island. The opening ceremony was done on the 24th November 2006 by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail. The mosque may cater up to 2000 people at one time. The mosque is a resemblance to a floating mosque in Jeddah, Arab Saudi. It is a landmark that showcases the glorious and excellence of Islamic craftmanship.
Interestingly the tower for this mosque also serves as lighthouse that emits light to the boats and ships that pass through Straits of Malacca. White building with golden dome dominates this part of Straits of Malacca blends well with the blue water of the sea.
Masjid Selat is best viewed at night for the lighting makes it a perfect subject for night photography.
Too bad, when I was there, it was daytime. I must return to see Masjid Selat standing proud at Straits of Malacca.
